For those of you living under a rock...
The Pope is dying. Though the Pope and I are of different creeds I respect much of what the Pope has tried to accomplish over the years. It was inevitable to finally hear news of his deterioration. I actually expected him to die last year. But to finally hear the words "the Pope is dying" on the news this morning put me into a deep melanchonic state. This is a man who's been around as Pope since before my birth. You tend to take for granted that he'd be around longer when you get used to him being around in the first place.
Now, I've never met the Pope, but my Dad has. He doesn't talk about it much but from what I gather my Dad approves of the Pope, if not his creed. And that's a pretty big thing.
Anyway, that's not the point I'm trying to make. The Pope is a good man but I'm sure that there will be people around the world that will say "It's about time!" and rejoice. And that's a tragedy. Not because the Pope died. It was inevitable, so I can deal with that. The tragedy is that people will be happy that he died, not because they hated him but what he represents. They are rejoicing because they hate his creed. It is a tragedy because they cannot see beyond the irrational hate and see a good man.
Rumoku out!
